昨年11月に開講した本学経済学部の特別講座、グローバル人材育成事業「ニュージーランド経済とビジネスイングリッシュ」も終わりが近づきました。今回は１月２０日に実施された講義と国内研修について報告します。

平成30年1月20日（土）、広島県支援によるグローバル人材育成事業の講義にニュージーランド大使館のガイ参事官（１次産業担当）が来られ、ご講演いただきました。その午後、参加者と一緒に松永港の製材工場と、三次ワイナリーをバスツアー見学しました。松永港では、当日講義を頂いた（株）オービスの中浜社長と谷本木材事業部長のご案内で、工場、木材搬入港、新工場を見学しながら事業の説明をして頂きました。

その後バスで三次ワイナリーに移動し、太田醸造長に圃場と醸造施設の説明を受けました。太田醸造長は、ニュージーランドのリンカーン大学でブドウ作りとワイン醸造を学ばれた方です。試飲で頂いた巴ワインは最近進境著しいと評判で、大使館の方も「これはおいしい！」と絶賛でした。
帰りのバスの中はワインが入って大盛り上がりで、学生さんもみんな英語で話して、まるでパブにいるようでした。という楽しく、充実した１日でした。オービスの中浜社長、三次ワイナリーの大田醸造所長を始めご協力頂いた方々に厚く感謝いたします。どうもありがとうございました。
講義を担当している国際経済学科のビセット准教授からの報告も紹介します。

Every Saturday since November, a group of students, faculty and business people have been gathering at the Miyachi Shigeru Memorial Building in Fukuyama to learn about New Zealand, and in particular about primary industries there and the connections to Fukuyama area businesses and industry. It has been a very interesting series of lectures, but for the first time, we left the classroom to see our studies in action.
First we visited the operations of Orbis on the shores of Matsunaga Bay. I’m sure most people have seen the floating logs in the bay ready for cutting and mountains of wood chips on the shore to be transported by ship to paper manufacturers in Shikoku. We had the chance to look inside their operations in both the existing mill, which we saw in operation, and the massive new high-tech mill across the bay, which when completed will be fully automated. We could clearly see the differences in appearance and quality of the different types of wood, pine and cedar, from New Zealand and Japan. And also a better understanding of the economics of resources and how Japanese firms are dealing with the massive increase in demand for raw materials from New Zealand by China. It is this kind of learning that allows students to more fully understand what they are taught in a classroom environment.
We then ventured inland, taking a school bus to Miyoshi, where there is a winery. The head winemaker there is a graduate of Lincoln University in Christchurch, where some of the students will visit in February. The key point we learned is that by adapting the most modern and efficient techniques (many of which he learned in New Zealand) the Miyoshi winery is able to make high quality products even though Japan is not an ideal climate for growing the kind of grapes needed. We saw various experimental methods in action and the students could get a solid understanding of the industry.
We started the day at 9:00 at the Miyachi Shigeru Memorial Building in Fukuyama and arrived back at about 7:00PM. It was a long day, but we made sure to take our two guests from the New Zealand embassy to eat Okonomiyaki before saying goodbye.
